Open full gallery →IIT Madras is an Institute of Eminence founded through Indo-German collaboration: after Nehru’s 1956 visit to West Germany, the first Indo-German Agreement was signed in Bonn in 1959 and the institute was formally inaugurated the same year by Prof. Humayun Kabir. Declared an Institute of National Importance by Parliament in 1961, it has grown into a residential research university with sixteen academic departments on a large wooded Chennai campus.
