How SGPA combines into CGPA

The credit-weighted formula

CGPA = Σ(Credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ(Credits) — every semester's SGPA is weighted by how many credits that semester carried, then divided by total credits across all semesters. This is the formula used under AICTE and UGC guidelines, and by most Indian engineering and degree colleges.

A semester with 24 credits pulls your CGPA more than a semester with 18 credits, even at the same SGPA — which is why a simple unweighted average can drift from your official CGPA if your credit load changed across semesters.

When a simple average is close enough

If your university keeps roughly the same number of credits every semester (common in many B.Tech and B.E. programmes), a simple average of your SGPAs will be very close to — often identical to — the credit-weighted result. Leave the credits fields blank and the calculator switches to a plain average automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula to convert SGPA to CGPA?

CGPA is the credit-weighted average of your semester SGPAs: CGPA = Σ(Credits × SGPA) ÷ Σ(Credits), summed across every semester you've completed. This is the standard formula used under AICTE and UGC guidelines. If you don't know your exact credits per semester, a simple average of your SGPAs is a close approximation as long as your credit load was roughly similar each semester.

Do I need to enter credits for every semester?

No — credits are optional. If you leave them blank, the calculator uses a simple average of your SGPAs. If you fill in credits for every semester, it switches automatically to the more accurate credit-weighted average, which is what your official transcript will use if your credit load varies semester to semester.

Where do I find my credits per semester?

Your semester grade card or transcript lists total credits for that semester, usually next to or below your SGPA. If you can't find it, most universities keep credit loads consistent across semesters, so a simple average will usually be very close to your official CGPA.

Is this the same as CGPA to percentage conversion?

No — this tool combines multiple semester SGPAs into a single cumulative CGPA. To convert that CGPA (or even a single semester's SGPA) into a percentage, use our CGPA to Percentage Calculator, which supports CBSE, VTU, Anna University, Mumbai University, and more.
