How this JEE Main college predictor works
How JoSAA closing ranks work
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) publishes opening and closing ranks after each counselling round for every institute, programme, seat type, gender, and quota. The closing rank is the last rank that got a seat in that combination for that round.
For JEE Main counselling, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs use your JEE Main category rank (not your All-India Rank alone). IITs are allocated via JEE Advanced — use the JEE Advanced College Predictor for those.
How we compute Safe / Moderate / Ambitious bands
For each institute + programme matching your category, gender, and filters, we look at the final-round closing ranks over the last three years available in our dataset. If your rank is at or better than the best (lowest) of those three, we label it Safe. Between the best and worst of those three is Moderate. Up to 15% above the worst closing rank is Ambitious. Anything beyond that is omitted — we do not show long-shot false hope.
Bands are estimates from historical public data, not an admission guarantee. Cutoffs move every year with seat matrix, applicant behaviour, and round dynamics.
What counts as your category rank
JoSAA cutoffs are published category-wise (OPEN, EWS, OBC-NCL, SC, ST, and PwD variants). Enter the rank for your own category as shown on your scorecard / counselling portal — not your overall General / CRL rank, unless you are in the OPEN category.
Selecting a home state unlocks Home-State (HS) quota rows at NITs in that state, in addition to All-India (AI) rows.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AIR and category rank?
All-India Rank (CRL / overall) orders everyone together. Category rank orders candidates within your reservation category. JoSAA closing ranks are category-wise — always enter your category rank for this tool.
How many JoSAA rounds are there?
JoSAA typically runs about 5–6 allocation rounds per counselling cycle (exact count varies by year). We use the final round of each year for band computation when multiple rounds are present.
What if I do not get any college in round 1?
Later rounds often move closing ranks as seats open up from withdrawals and upgrades. This predictor uses final-round history as a season-end reference — round-1 outcomes can be stricter.
Home state vs all-India quota — what is the difference?
At many NITs, a share of seats is reserved for candidates whose home state matches the institute state (HS), with other seats under Other State / All-India style quotas. Entering your home state lets us also surface HS rows for matching institutes.
Is this predictor official or affiliated with JoSAA / NTA?
No. Knwdle is not affiliated with JoSAA or NTA. This tool is built from publicly published JoSAA opening and closing rank data and is an estimate only.
How often is the data updated?
During the JoSAA counselling window (roughly 1 June – 15 September) we refresh daily at 3:00 AM IST. Outside that window we run a weekly freshness check on Sundays at 3:00 AM IST, in case of off-cycle corrections.
