How VTU CGPA converts to percentage
Follow the steps below. Each block explains what to enter and how to read the result.
The official formula
VTU official formula (vtu.ac.in): Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Applicable to the 2015, 2017, and 2018 schemes as published in VTU's official CGPA standard formula circular.
For example, a VTU CGPA of 8.6 converts to 78.50%.
What makes VTU's conversion distinctive
VTU’s published formula is Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 — so an 8.00 CGPA becomes 72.5%, not 80%; students who paste a generic ×10 into placement forms systematically overstate VTU percentages.
Other universities use a different formula
CGPA-to-percentage conversion is not standardised across India — each university publishes its own circular. The table below shows every formula this calculator supports, so you can double-check or switch if you need a different one.
Frequently asked questions
Common doubts about formulas, eligibility rules, and how we source defaults.
What is the VTU CGPA to percentage formula?
VTU official formula (vtu.ac.in): Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. Applicable to the 2015, 2017, and 2018 schemes as published in VTU's official CGPA standard formula circular.
Is this the official VTU formula?
Yes — it's taken from VTU's own published circular/regulations, not estimated from a generic multiplier. Using the wrong formula (for example, assuming a flat ×9.5 multiplier when your university uses an offset) can misstate your percentage by several points on official documents.
Does the same formula apply to both CGPA and SGPA?
Yes for VTU — the published conversion is the same linear function of the grade-point value for a semester SGPA or a cumulative CGPA ((CGPA − 0.75) × 10). Use this page for SGPA or the companion CGPA page for the cumulative score.
How do I convert percentage back to grade points?
Switch to "Percentage → CGPA" mode above — it reverses the same VTU formula correctly, including undoing any offset.
Can I use this for other universities too?
Yes — use the "University / board" dropdown in the calculator to switch to another supported university, or enter your own custom multiplier if yours is not listed.
