BI Teacher Training Institute, Pallom

Buchanan Institutions Teachers Training Institute is an old institute, which was established in year 1865. Situated in Kottayam district of Kerala, this institute is exclusively a standalone one to prepare future generation of teachers. Recognised by the NCTE it is affiliated with a small 6. 6-acre campus area out of which the institute occupies only 7 acres.

Despite being a little over two decades old, BI Teacher Training Institute only admits female students and at the time this writing the institution was home to 44 students and 4 members of staff. The institute provides only one focused programme related to the teacher education which proves the fact the guild is more interested in the quality of the professional preparation than the quantity of offered courses.

Buchanan Institutions Teachers Training Institute has numerous learning resources that have been established with an aim of improving learning environment for the students. In the present study, school library has been defined as a library that stock sufficient information required by the novice teachers. The college has departmental practical facilities which are a primary component in pedagogy/training.

An auditorium is provided on the campus with a limit of organising some events and seminars enhancing the academic environment. Buchanan Institutions Teachers Training Institute also gives much importance to technological development and has good quality IT facilities so that students can understand and use effective tools for learning.

In the same note, to enhance the comprehensive development, there are facilities for sports with a view of allowing children to exercise while studying.

Interestingly, the institute offers hostels for boys and for girls Nevertheless, it is worth to note that at the present time the institute is therefore only accepting female students, which means potential for its further development of future amendments to the policy or changing the admission procedures. BI Teacher Training Institute provides a narrow specialisation based on preparing qualified teachers.

As for now, the institute has only one course to offer which is the D. El. Ed (Diploma in Elementary Education) which is a full time course extending over two years. The course is highly structured with an aim of preparing students to develop into professionally capable elementary school teachers.

Though the institute has limited opportunities of degree programmes, it offers probability of providing specialised, quality education to the teachers of elementary level. The organisation structure of students’ enrolment at BI Teacher Training Institute follows its president’s policy that emphasises on the merit system as required by the state government.

Concerning admission, candidates are selected through their performances in qualifying examinations or entrance tests or any other mode which is prescribed by the Kerala government. It helps to achieve the goal and intent of providing quality teachers to teach on the youth of this country on merit as well as passion.
