Tuition receipt vs tuition invoice

Use an invoice when tax details matter

A tuition fee receipt acknowledges that money was received. A tuition fee invoice states what was billed, the taxable value, SAC code, GST rate, tax split, and invoice total. GST-registered coaching, tuition, and training providers need the invoice details for compliance and for business recipients claiming input-tax credit.

This tool computes CGST+SGST for intra-state supplies or IGST for inter-state supplies. The default 18% rate matches commercial training and coaching under SAC 999293, while still allowing another rate if your tax advisor classifies a specific supply differently.

Recognised school tuition can be different

Recognised school education is generally exempt under GST, but private tuition, coaching, test-prep, and commercial training are not treated the same way. That distinction is why this page is aimed at tuition/coaching invoices rather than ordinary school fee receipts.

Format source

GST invoice structure based on Rule 46 of the CGST Rules, 2017. Commercial training and coaching services are generally taxable under SAC 999293 at 18% per Notification No. 11/2017-Central Tax (Rate); recognised school education may be exempt under Entry 66 of Notification No. 12/2017-Central Tax (Rate).

Frequently asked questions

Is tuition fee taxable under GST?

Commercial tuition, coaching, and training services are generally taxable when GST registration applies. Recognised school education may be exempt; classification depends on the provider and service.

What is the difference between a tuition receipt and invoice?

A receipt confirms payment. An invoice states the taxable supply, SAC, GST rate, tax amount, and invoice total. GST-registered providers need invoice-level details.

What SAC code should coaching or tuition use?

Commercial training and coaching commonly use SAC 999293. Confirm the exact classification with your tax advisor for mixed services or material sales.

When should I choose IGST?

Choose IGST for inter-state supplies, such as an online tuition provider billing a student or business recipient in another state. Choose CGST+SGST for intra-state supplies.

Can this invoice include study material?

Yes, add study material as a separate line. Its GST treatment can vary if sold separately, so verify the rate before issuing the final invoice.
