IITM Pune was founded as the Institute of Tropical Meteorology as a distinct unit of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on November 17, 1962, in Pune. On April 01, 1971, IITM was renamed the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and was transformed into an autonomous organisation. IITM Pune has been under the administrative control of the specially formed Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES).
