Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) is a premier research organisation founded in 1971 and situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Located in the locality of Adyar, MIDS has been an acknowledged pioneer of social scientific research methodologies for more than 50 years. The Institute for Academic and Research Excellence has opened many doctoral and fellowship programmes in different fields of study.

With 10 committed full-time members in the faculty, MIDS offers an intellectual and supportive setting for scholars to unfold pathbreaking issues in the socially and economically emerging world. MIDS boasts an efficient infrastructural base that improves the learning and research in various areas of the country.

The institute’s library is particularly well stocked with books, journals and government documents that phenocopy social science researchers. This means that the library acquires approximately 1500 volumes in a year, and its stock grows continually to cater to the researchers’ requirements.

The facility available at MIDS with respect to IT consists of well-equipped, advanced computer labs with modern hardware supplies and software. Implemented and directed by a professional systems analyst, the computer centre serves the technological needs of the faculty, students, and many research initiatives.

In addition to the academic atmosphere, MIDS also has sports facilities, well-equipped laboratory facilities, an auditorium for events/seminars and is a perfect setting to prepare for all-round academic self-development. For the school to be more research-orientated and competitive, it only provides six full-time courses , and all these are offered at the doctoral as well as fellowship levels.

At present, the institute offers PhD programmes in social development, economics , and political science and fellowships in Sociology , political science and economics. MIDS has challenging admission procedures which are extremely competitive since MIDS aims at creating a pool of future researchers.
