It was one of the first four colleges like this in India, supported by the government. They give training to teachers and staff, and they also work on making technical education better in India.
In 2003, the government made it a national institute because of its good work in improving technical education. NITTTR Kolkata is an autonomous college of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology Kolkata , and is recognised by AICTE. Tech Multimedia Software Systems , M. Tech Structural Engineering, Ph. D Civil Engineering , Ph. D Computer Science and Engineering, Ph. D Mechanical Engineering and Ph. D Electrical Engineering. NITTTR Kolkata admission to the M. Tech course is granted through the GATE entrance exam. The Ph. D admissions are done based on merit.
