Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model College, Kakopathar

Padmanath Gohain Baruah Government Model College is a government-run higher education institution in Assam, operating under the Department of Higher Education. It began its academic activities in August 2020, following the foundation stone being laid by then Education Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma in October 2017.

The college is affiliated with Dibrugarh University and offers programs primarily in the Arts stream at both higher secondary and undergraduate levels. Situated in Dirak–Kakopather, about 60–65 km from Tinsukia district headquarters, the college serves the border area between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

It caters to the educational needs of students from the Kakopather and Saikhowa development blocks and nearby rural regions, making it an accessible learning hub for students from underdeveloped areas. The college offers higher secondary Arts programs under the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC). These include compulsory subjects like English, MIL (Assamese) or Alternative English, and Environmental Science, along with electives such as Economics, Education Honors :, Political Science, and Sociology. For undergraduate education, it provides B. A. (Hons.

) courses in BA Assamese Honours , Economics, Education, English, Political Science, and Sociology under Dibrugarh University’s Choice Based Credit System. From 2023, the college also started offering six postgraduate Arts courses via Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University in open and distance learning mode.

The institution’s mission is to provide accessible, high-quality, and inclusive education, encouraging holistic student development. It is equipped with modern digital classrooms, a well-stocked library, and facilities that support excursions and practical exposure. Co-curricular and extracurricular activities are given importance to ensure a balance of academic and skill-based learning.

Under the leadership of Principal Dr. T. R. Majinder, the college promotes an interactive and participatory teaching-learning environment. The pedagogy includes lectures, tutorials, discussions, assignments, seminars, fieldwork, projects, and student presentations. Faculty members maintain regular engagement and monitoring to support the overall academic and personal growth of students.

Since its inception, the college has organized various cultural, academic, and awareness programs. These include annual foundation day celebrations with cultural performances and plantation drives, felicitation ceremonies for meritorious students, workshops, and awareness drives on topics like health, environment, and career guidance.

It also conducts educational excursions and has established a student-run museum showcasing traditional ethnic attire, highlighting the cultural richness of the region. Currently, the college has more than 600 students enrolled, supported by over 20 teachers and staff members.

It comprises six academic departments and offers more than 20 distinct courses, making it a growing center for higher education in the Kakopather region.
