Every one of these eight states has its own National Institute of Technology (Silchar in Assam, plus dedicated NITs in Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim, and NIT Agartala in Tripura, one of the original Regional Engineering Colleges) — a direct result of India's policy of guaranteeing at least one NIT per state. IIT Guwahati, in Assam, is the zone's sole IIT.
