The College of Teacher Education, Shillong as a college for future teachers was founded in 1964. Situated in Laitumkhrah, Shillong, this is one of the co-educational colleges which is under the scanner of the state government and also get the NCTE Approval. Located on a limited plot of land of about 1. 405 acres the college has a current enrollment of one hundred students in total and faculty of ten.
The institution offers only one course, which is the Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) which trains teachers. However, in spite of this objective approach based on the STL curriculum, the college continues to offer proper education based on fundamental learning principles in the atmosphere.
In as much as learning takes place, the College of Teacher Education, Shillong has a host of facilities to support learnings as highlighted next. The college library, another important sources of learning in any college, serves as home to more than 8,867 books and has subscriptions to more than thirteen magazines or journals. It uses modern library management software tools such as KOHA for its operations.
The psychological laboratory provides student-teachers with different assessment methods and informed tests; the common science laboratory is for practical purposes in physical and life science. In the enhancement of ICT, the school has made provision of a computer laboratory to accommodate fifty students.
The college also contains a 200 seats auditorium, a separate hostels for boys and girls, and a gymnasium for the fittest students. With regards to its programmes offered, the College of Teacher Education, Shillong specializes in teacher education with its B. Ed programme . This is a two-year full time course with an approved annual capacity of 50 students.
The intent for this programme is to provide students with the educational skills and knowledge to pursue a career in teaching. Although the college awards only one degree, this specialisation enables the college to focus on the preparation of teachers in an intense manner. The admission procedure in the College of Teacher Education, Shillong admitting students for the B.
Ed program includes the kind of students who have potentiality in teaching profession.
